N-Sentinel Monitoring Cloud-based Analysis Delivers Actionable Guidance to Reduce Cyber Risks
ADDISON, TX – May 11, 2016 – N-Dimension, a market leading Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) with innovative solutions that protect smart energy networks from cyber threats, today announced La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) is now using N-Sentinel Monitoring. With N-Sentinel Monitoring, they have timely awareness and in-depth insights into anomalous network traffic as well as specific actions to take to reduce risk.
LPEA serves the counties of La Plata and Archuleta in Southwest Colorado. They deliver services to approximately 32,000 customers spanning 3,056 square miles. The utility focuses on the delivery of safe, reliable power at the lowest reasonable cost to customer while being environmentally responsible.
“Today, it is not enough to simply put up a firewall and scan for viruses,” said Drew Timmerman, network administrator, LPEA. “We want to identify suspicious behavior before any threat materializes. N-Sentinel Monitoring provides us with timely awareness, threat intelligence and actions for us to take to improve our security posture.”
The utility considered other options before selecting N-Sentinel Monitoring to continuously assess their mission critical operations and corporate networks for traffic irregularities. While no malicious activity has been uncovered, several potential risks have been identified that IT has taken action on to improve security. For example, a third party Application Programming Interface (API) was identified by N-Sentinel Monitoring, which was communicating using plain text passwords. IT was alerted to this and able to address the issue by working with the vendor to ensure all communication is encrypted. In addition to detecting anomalous traffic, N-Sentinel Monitoring analyzes it and uses intelligence to aggregate issues and deliver to customers the specific information they need to understand security concerns and timely actions they can take to reduce risk.
“Intrusion detection and cybersecurity analytics and intelligence is well worth the effort but it could easily be a full-time job. Most co-ops don’t have the manpower to dedicate such resources to this effort which is where the N-Sentinel Monitoring solution adds significant value,” said Timmerman.
“Cybersecurity requires in-depth expertise and vigilance,” said Tom Ayers, N-Dimension president and CEO. “By combining our technology with cybersecurity intelligence and experts, we uniquely deliver to our customers the analysis and recommendations they need to take appropriate action, reducing risk.”
Upcoming events N-Dimension will be participating in iinclude the EDA Operations & IT Forum on Cybersecurity (May 31, Ontario, Canada), Milsoft Users Conference (June 7-9, ChampionsGate, FL), and APPA National Conference (June 10-15, Phoenix, AZ).
