The Consert real-time, two-way, measurable and verifiable Solution enables public power utilities to manage peak demand, improve utility operations, and help their consumers lower their energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint.
Participating consumers in the Consert Virtual Peak Power SM (VPP) Solution manage their energy usage without compromising control, comfort, or convenience.
Participants access Consert’s secure online portal and set up energy profiles that fit their personal living habits. For example, the temperature can be set higher or lower when leaving home in the morning and re-adjusted prior to returning at the end of the day, depending on the season. Participants are free to change their settings at any time by changing their program preferences at home or remotely via their Internet-based web portal or a smart phone.
Consert installs typically three hardware devices:
--a device controller on high energy consumption devices such as water heaters, air conditioners and pool pumps for energy measurement and load control
--a communicating gateway under the glass of a smart meter
--a programmable communicating thermostat
The measurement and control devices communicate wirelessly via ZigBee to the Consert Gateway. The Gateway communicates in real time to the Consert Data Center via Verizon’s Wireless 3G and 4G networks.
Upon answering a few easy questions to set up programs to manage their energy use, participating consumers give the utility dynamic permission to briefly control these devices during high energy events. Utility operators view aggregated consumption data in the form of detailed computer graphics, facilitating quick load projections and managing available power usage on their system. Load conservation events manage only the load the utility needs, precisely when it is needed. A utility with time or market-based wholesale pricing will find the Consert Solution invaluable in managing its load against peak pricing periods.
