Steve’s Love Letter to Fort Collins
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you in January in Fort Collins, a great public power community. I’ve been trying for many years to find a way to get you all to my hometown, so am glad we are finally making that “connection” (pun intended). I’ve been here for over 30 years and in that time, have seen the population double. Yet Fort Collins remains distinctive largely because of its Old Town area. Main Street Disney was largely patterned after the historic storefronts, courthouse and fire station of Fort Collins Old Town. Today, Old Town’s shops are filled more with restaurants, brewpubs, art galleries and gift shops and the town is known for beer (25 breweries and counting) and increasingly, live music. In January, the holiday lights (LED of course) will still be on through all of Old Town.
The Hotel Elizabeth is a new, but instantly classic Old Town hotel and conference center. It is one of about 150 Marriott properties worldwide that are part of their Autograph Collection. Like each of the Autograph properties, The Elizabeth has a unique focus, in their case, music. Musical instruments can be borrowed, record players are scattered through many of the rooms. The distinctive 164 room hotel features locally curated art, whimsical décor and one of a kind experiences including The Emporium Kitchen and Wine Market, Bowerbird Coffee, The Magic Rat live music venue, and Sunset Lounge, a rooftop cocktail bar.
Fort Collins not part of metro Denver, as it sits about 60 miles north. Yet, it is only about 20 minutes longer of drive than the drive to Golden, where we’ve been in the past. If you rent a car, let them know you’ll be using E-470 toll road in case they need to add a transponder. Shuttle service runs between DIA and Fort Collins through Groome Transportation. It looks like the first passenger is $49 one way for the first passenger, $30 for each additional.
